Otilia is a professional freelance translator based in Caracas-Venezuela. She has gone a long way to become a translator. First, she started studying English as a second language at the Venezuelan American Center (CVA) in Caracas, and completed the intermediate level. Then, she traveled to the United States to continue studying English, and she was awarded a certificate from the English Language Program of Ohio Wesleyan University for completion of the university preparatory level (1 year). Once she came back to Venezuela, she attended a translation course, and she got a translator English-Spanish-English certificate from the Núcleo de Estudios Lingüísticos y Sociales, Caracas (two years). Otilia soon realized that the mind-challenging profession of translator was ideal for her. She continued onwards with the building of her profession, and studied at the School of Modern Languages of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, and she got a BA degree in translation (five years). Relevant courses included: Languages (English, German and Spanish), linguistics, culture, literature, and translation theories and techniques in three languages.
Otilia has also attended courses and seminars in discourse analysis, reading strategies, composition, grammar, contrastive grammar, terminology, rhetoric, creative writing, among others, and she is extremely interested in topics such as linguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics and language learning and teaching.
Before being a translator, Otilia was executive secretary for six years. As a bilingual secretary for international companies she has had to handle communications, correspondence and texts of high degree of complexity and variability in two languages (English-Spanish).
In 1992 Otilia became a freelancer. Since then, she has translated a wide range of texts including technical, scientific, legal, commercial, academic, literary and general texts, and she has specialized in translation from English into Latin-American Spanish.
As freelancer Otilia also gives private Spanish and English lessons, and participates as an assistant for research projects.
Otilia is member 107-04 of the A.C. Colegio Nacional de Licenciados en Traducción e Interpretación de Venezuela (CONALTI), the main Venezuela's translators and interperters association and member of FIT.
